Additionally, caregivers and nursing home staff should follow general health and sanitation practices, like frequent hand washing and sanitation of hard surfaces. Nursing homes should regulate resident activity to ensure that those with weakened immune systems are not exposed to germs, and staff should make sure residents maintain good health through a nutritious diet, adequate rest, and opportunities for mobility. When pneumonia is diagnosed, nursing home staff should administer treatment – which usually involves antibiotics – as soon as possible.
If a nursing home fails to follow these practices, and a resident develops pneumonia, then that facility may be liable for any consequences. This means the nursing home may be responsible for medical bills, out-of-pocket expenses, and related pain and suffering.
