Man Charged with Battery of Senior Citizen

We want our loved ones to receive the best care possible when they get older. If we are unable to offer that care ourselves, we look to places such as nursing homes to provide that care for our senior loved ones. Unfortunately, abuse sometimes occurs in such facilities.

In Galesburg, Illinois, a man has been charged in the battery of a senior citizen during the course of his employment at a nursing facility. The victim was transported to OSF St. Mary’s Medical Center’s emergency department having injuries to his face and neck that were consistent with receiving an attack to the face and choked. Local authorities were then called to the hospital. Representatives of the Marigold facility cooperated with the investigation and this led to an arrest warrant for Shinall. The elderly victim died several weeks later and further charges are being investigated.

Claude Richard Shinall, age 25 appeared again in court Friday on the charges against him. At the time of the alleged incident, he had been an employee of the Marigold Rehabilitation and Health Care Center where the victim resided.

The charge against Shinall, one count of aggravated battery of a senior citizen age 60 or older, is a class three felony. It carries a minimum sentence of two years and a maximum of five years in jail. His bond was set at $150,000.
