Fraud Case in Tennessee Leads to Elder Abuse Charges

The Federal government has entered into a lawsuit against the owner of several nursing homes, alleging fraud. Vanguard Healthcare, LLC is accused of submitting false claims to Medicare and Tenncare. The nursing homes then failed to provide its residents with even the most basic of care.

According to the lawsuit, residents suffered from pressure ulcers, falls, dehydration and malnutrition. All of this was due to lack of care.

Facilities that are named in the lawsuit include Boulevard Terrace Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Crestview Health and Rehabilitation, Glen Oaks Health and Rehabilitation, Manchester Health Care Center, Poplar Point Health and Rehabilitation and Imperial Gardens Health and Rehabilitation, which is now defunct.

A 143-page inspection report detailed the horrific conditions uncovered at the Imperial facility. Included in that report was a case where a dying patient was left grimacing in pain and denied the pain medication his family had deposited to the facility that same day.

The report also chronicled conditions where the patients received medications late and in the wrong doses. Another case told of a resident who was not fed because a worker did not have time after their shift was over.

Despite the deplorable conditions at the Vanguard facilities, claims to Medicare and Tenncare were still sent out.

The Vanguard facilities named in the report filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy on May 6 according to the press release.
