While New Jersey has stepped up efforts to protect elderly citizens, incidents to happen. Despite their best efforts, nursing homes sometimes hire people who might not have the ideal demeanor to deal with patients who are older and have numerous conditions. As NJ.com reports, three people have been indicted in cases involving elder abuse.
Last Thursday was World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and charges were announced against three nurse’s aides. Recently, state authorities have been cracking down on the abuse of patients in nursing homes and those receiving in-home care.
The charges against the three aides are separate and they worked in separate facilities across Camden, Passaic, and Warren counties. The indictments were handed down on June 6 and June 8.
44-year-old Debra L. Matela of Turnersville, was allegedly caught be a surveillance camera as she kicked a wheelchair out from under a patient, 73, at Northbrook Behavioral Health Hospital in Blackwood. She is facing charges of 3rd degree aggravated assault.
54-year-old Cairy Chrisphonte, was witnessed hitting an 87-year-old dementia patient in the head and arm by co-workers. The incident took place at the Daughters of Mirium nursing home in Clifton. Chrisphonte is facing charges of fourth degree assault on an institutionalized elderly person.
55-year-old Danny Brown was allegedly seen threatening a 53-year old wheelchair bound patient after punching him. Brown was employed at the Lopatcong Care Center. He has been indicted on charges of endangering another person and making terroristic threats.
Attorneys for the three accused could not immediately been reached.
